The Spirits of Nuwara Eliya

Monks after all are famous worldwide for creating champagne and yet little is known about the local Sri Lankan brews such as chateaux beetroot and lime wine produced lovingly by the Franciscan sisters. one would not expect to find a wine making operation hidden away in the heart of Nuwara Eliya – the hill-capital of Sri Lanka – where a group of pious women known as the order of Franciscan Sisters, make and sell daily everything from condiments to coconut wines with as much spirit in them as the girls themselves who run the place. Each one is on a personal mission to use the cash made from this highly successful business to help give orphans and people who have fallen off the track a second chance in life.

Colombo: The Gentrified City in Asia

Due to its central location at the crossroads of major maritime trading routes, Colombo was constantly used by the Romans, the Chinese and the Arabs. After two successive invasions by two different colonial powers - the Portuguese and the Dutch - the British declared Colombo as the Capital City, deeming it the country’s primary merchant harbour, having expelled the King of Kandy in 1815. It is fast becoming the most gentrified city in Asia, restoring it to something that is, perhaps for all its struggles, even greater than the buzzing city it once was during the colonial times. The city lends itself perfectly to a series of exciting walking and bike tours, exposing the curious visitor to unparalleled sites and experiences never to be forgotten.
